Strong performance helping to build a stronger UBC

UBC Investment Management released its FY24-25 Annual Report today, delivering superior performance over the past 12 months on behalf of the funds we manage: the University of British Columbia Endowment, the UBC Staff Pension Plan and UBC’s Long Term Liquidity Pool.

“UBC Investment Management works tirelessly to build a stronger UBC – helping to secure its place as one of the leading research and teaching institutions in the world – while providing safe, stable retirements for the people who shaped, and continue to shape the university,” says UBC Investment Management President and CEO Dawn Jia. “This past year was no different, as we delivered solid returns that will help UBC deliver on its mission.”

FY24-25 highlights include:

  • Total Assets Under Management grew to $6.9B, an increase of $751M in one year
  • One year investment returns totalled $652M
  • UBC’s Main Endowment Pool generated returns of 13.9% over the past year (annualized returns of 11.1% over the past five years)
  • UBC’s Staff Pension Plan generated returns of almost 10% (7.5% five-year annualized) given its chosen risk level

FY24-25 also saw UBC Investment Management advance its Responsible Investing strategy to help both UBC and the Staff Pension Plan advance their own environmental and human rights objectives. Highlights include:

  • At year-end, the Endowment fund’s carbon footprint was 57% lower than the baseline levels set in 2019, and its carbon intensity 60% lower
  • Carbon footprint and intensity measures for the UBC Staff Pension Plan have both decreased by 42% and 43% respectively over the same period
  • Incorporated more than 20 social and governance metrics into our monitoring dashboard, a tool that aggregates key ESG indicators across our public market exposures to highlight potential risks related to non-climate factors such as human rights controversies, labour standards, supply chain standards, and workforce and board diversity
  • Using our proprietary Manager Assessment framework, our team conducted 45 manager reviews to assess the ESG performance of each external manager we work with on behalf of the funds we manage, including developing a human rights integration baseline assessment
